Welcome to our March Postcard from the Lake District, where the daffodils are blooming and the lambs have started to arrive. On that topic – if you have a dog, please make sure it’s kept on a lead at all times during the lambing period if you’re walking.

This month we begin with a government consultation on designated bathing water status for Coniston and Derwentwater. You can watch my video interviewing swimmers about it here. You only have a day or so to respond, so please click the link below as soon as you’ve watched the video.

We’re disappointed about the A66 upgrade decision, which was given the go-ahead by the Secretary of State for Transport on Thursday. The scheme is rated “Poor Value” by the Department for Transport’s own assessment criteria, and it will damage several sensitive habitats and increase carbon emissions.

Read on for more news of our campaigns against inappropriate developments at Roanhead on the coast, and at Elterwater Quarry (and watch this space for news of how you can get involved over the coming days).

And adverse weather led to a postponement of Keswick's lighting Switch Off event last month but we're looking forward to a full moon on the new date of Tuesday 23rd April.

With our very best wishes,

Michael Hill, CEO
Friends of the Lake District
