Welcome to our December Postcard. After a surprise heavy fall of snow last weekend, it was great to see the Cumbrian community spirit kicking in, with residents in the worst hit areas offering beds and meals to stranded motorists. And that spirit was also in full effect at our Fell Care Day in Buttermere, where we had a great day of conservation volunteering. Watch my video of it here.

After a summer of campaigning by Friends of the Lake District and local community groups, it was great to see that Roanhead has been given a reprieve this week, with the withdrawal of a planning application for a huge holiday park between Askam- and Barrow-In-Furness. It may come back in a revised form, but we’ll take the win for Christmas!

Our ‘Good Lighting Guide’ for Cumbria has been launched and has already won two awards! Providing technical lighting guidance to planners, it will also help anyone installing or replacing lighting to make good lighting choices to help reduce light pollution.

And Monday is our last day to order gifts to guarantee Christmas delivery - would someone you know like a Friends Gift Membership, or a present that helps Lake District landscapes and habitats? Read on for details of how to order.

With our very best wishes,

Michael Hill, CEO
Friends of the Lake District
