Welcome to our January Postcard from the Lake District. We hope you had a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year. We’re kicking off 2024 with a look at the Smardale Lime kilns, restored as part of our Westmorland Dales project. Watch our video about it here.

Just before Christmas a revised planning application came in for a visitor attraction at Elterwater Quarry, which we'll respond to before the deadline of the end of January. We remain opposed in principle to a major tourist attraction in this small remote community, which is already under huge visitor pressure. Read on for more details.

Next month we'll be celebrating Dark Skies with a Cumbria Star Count you can get involved with, to help track light pollution. We’ll also be encouraging businesses and individuals to get involved in our Big Switch Off events in Keswick, Ambleside and Grasmere. Dates and times below.

And our hedge-laying training is at the end of the month, followed by our annual hedge-laying competition a week later. You're very welcome to come along and watch this ancient skill in action, creating beautiful living structures which absorb carbon from the air, water from the ground, and provide food and shelter for wildlife.

With our very best wishes,

Michael Hill, CEO
Friends of the Lake District
