Welcome to our February Postcard from the Lake District.

We've just held a very successful hedgelaying training day followed by a competition last weekend. you can watch our video about it here.

On the planning front, we've now responded to the new application for a major visitor attraction at Elterwater Quarry, in an area that isn't at all equipped to deal with it. There's still time to make your voice heard too; details of how follow below.

There's also a new application for a holiday resort at Roanhead. The number of lodges has been reduced but the proposal remains huge, and will still result in significant harm to this sensitive area. Previous responses won’t count, so we need your help again to challenge the plans.

Tonight we're celebrating Dark Skies with a Big Switch Off event in Ambleside and Grasmere, where lights will go off from 7pm.

And you can still get involved in the Cumbria Star Count, which continues until 16th February.

With our very best wishes,

Michael Hill, CEO
Friends of the Lake District
