Our Purpose We are an independent charity and the only membership organisation dedicated to protecting and enhancing Cumbria's landscapes. We believe that the Lake District offers some of the most spectacular and precious landscapes in England. We take action to protect and enhance the natural beauty of these landscapes for the benefit of local communities, visitors, wildlife and habitats. We work to secure a landscape that is: Beautiful, diverse, locally distinctive, tranquil and environmentally healthy; Conserved and enhanced; Accessible and enjoyed by all. We work to ensure that people: Are inspired by the beauty and diversity of the landscape; Have an understanding of how the landscape has been shaped; Care for and help look after the landscape, both for its own sake and for the benefits it brings to people’s lives. As part of our Why Landscape Matters campaign, we have published Why Landscape Matters; a Landscape Charter for Cumbria and the Lake District”. This sets out the commitment of Friends of the Lake District to the landscapes of Cumbria. Click on image above to see a slideshow of the full document or to download it as a pdf file. The Landscape Charter has been created to explain why landscape matters to everyone, to affirm Friends of the Lake District’s commitment to protecting the remarkable landscapes of Cumbria and to highlight how we will work towards supporting a living, working, wildlife friendly and culturally rich landscape in Cumbria.
