Welcome to our latest Postcard From the Lakes. On Wednesday we were shocked to learn that the Government has given the go-ahead for plans to build a new coal mine in Cumbria, the first in 30 years. It's such a backwards step, when we should be moving forwards towards net-zero. We expect there to be a legal challenge to this that we will be supporting.

The Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership Scheme has a number of significant projects to complete in the next nine months. Our apprentices, who finish in February, are currently working on a major new footpath along the base of Tebay Fell. Scheme Manager David Evans and Apprentice Libby Firby-Fisk tell us about progress on the Tebay Footpath: This will provide a safe alternative off-road route from Tebay village to Lune’s Bridge which forms a loop to the western side of the M6, dipping into the Lake District National Park, before returning to Tebay over the Lune.

This week has also seen the government announce that it will let parts of the ELMs scheme go ahead, the nature based farming subsidies scheme recently reviewed, but leaving out the local nature recovery scheme which is very disappointing. Read more below.

You can find out more about the proposals for Brandelhow Cottage and the former FBA water testing site in Windermere below, and for stargazers there were some fantastic images of the lunar occultation of Mars this week, and if the cold clear weather holds, then get set for a fantastic display of the finest meteor shower of the year - the Geminid meteor shower on 13-14th December.

With our very best wishes,
Friends of the Lake District
