Welcome to our August Postcard. This month's video features a report from Helvellyn where I spent the day with the Fix the Fells team, witnessing first hand how vital its work is in protecting the mountain from erosion and ensuring access for the millions of visitors who enjoy high fell routes throughout the summer season.

Our annual Great Landscapes Festival gets underway in August with plenty of free opportunities on offer to get out with family or individually and learn about the landscape, its flora, fauna, heritage and management at events being held across Cumbria.

Our planning work carries on apace as we deal with a rash of telecommunication mast applications and submit our written response to the Planning Authority detailing our objections to the Roanhead Lodge development.

There is plenty of research and training underway on our land too as we learn about the miniature world of lichens and provide training for our volunteers in the identification of moths and butterflies. The more knowledge we have, the more effectively we can deliver our land management to provide the very best habitats for our native flora and fauna.

With our very best wishes,

Michael Hill, CEO
Friends of the Lake District
