Welcome to our latest Postcard From the Lakes, and January has been busy... with lots of things going on in the planning world, with notable updates on the Elterwater Quarry application, and the Armathwaite luge one, and others see below.

You can help in our groundbreaking research about our land at Little Asby by answering the survey below - it doesn't matter if you haven't visited before. The results will help with national research into how we value landscapes.

This month there's three short films to watch telling legendary stories of the Westmorland Dales, our guest blogger Pete Martin looks into the fascinating world of lichens in our woodlands, and the Annual Star Count to take part in.  And if you're in Ambleside or Grasmere on 23 February look out for the Big Switch Off to save energy and see more stars.  There's also new Landscape Gifts of bird nest boxes and bat boxes - owl boxes have been going up in our woods this week.  And our Nurtured by Nature project officially begins, see more below.

Our 'Postcard' enewsletter is going monthly in 2023 - but we'll be doing some special mailings about planning, events and our policy work in addition now, to ensure you're kept up to date!

With our very best wishes,
Friends of the Lake District
