Work began on Tuesday 5th October on one of the wettest days of the year.

Dan has started to make a path which will be surfaced and wide enough to take wheelchairs so that the public can explore the land. Over the next few weeks this will be followed by a custom made bridge.

When all the works are completed Friends of the Lake District will be holding a grand opening for the public and inviting ideas on how they would wish to use the land.

Friends of the Lake District’s Land Manager Jan Darrall said :

“We are absolutely delighted to accept this generous gift from Mike Hambrey. It will enable us to create a new community woodland and nature area for the local community and the many visitors walking past to climb Blencathra. Building the path and bridge is the first step in this exciting project and this work will be part funded by the legacy money from the Friends of Blencathra. We wanted to use this as close as possible to Blencathra as we could and you cannot get much closer than this!”
