Our History

Friends of the Lake District began at a rally in a park in Keswick in 1934, initially to campaign for the creation of a Lake District National Park, which they achieved in 1951. Many other battles have been fought since and continue today, to protect the landscapes of Cumbria.

23rd November 2023: Perfect Weather for Wetland Plants

This week the volunteers were at Dam Mire Wood at Threlkeld. It was a wet, cold and very muddy day and a new task for us… planting wetland plants... which may have appreciated the conditions more than we did!
8th November 2023: Autumn Colours and Bumper Crops at Dam Mire Wood

It is a bumper year for berries on not only the hawthorn trees, but also the alder at Dam Mire Wood. Apparently it's the biggest crop of hawthorn berries or haws as they are called in the last 20 years since records began

14th November 2022: Dam Mire Inspires Young Volunteers

It was a lovely change to be out with the volunteers in sunshine at Dam Mire Wood on Monday. We worked hard all morning trimming the tops of a hawthorn hedge and were very excited to be joined by Class 3 from Threlkeld School in the afternoon to plant a new 60m hedge.

On the hottest day of the year, our volunteers joined us at Dam Mire Wood in Threlkeld. With lots of breaks for water and shade, we were clearing the grass from around the trees which are now in their second summer.

9th May 2022: Tranquility Returns to Dam Mire Wood

On Monday we returned to Dam Mire Wood at Threlkeld for a workparty. What a different place to two weeks ago when we had our grand opening! All was quiet except for the birds singing and insects buzzing.

On a day of spring sunshine, local photographer and filmmaker Terry Abraham and six young photography competition winners from Threlkeld Primary School cut the ribbon on a new bridge over Kilnhow beck and declared Dam Mire Wood open!

Elterwater Quarry Adventure Attraction plans resubmitted

Just before Christmas, revised proposals were submitted for a visitor attraction at Elterwater Quarry. We have reviewed the plans, we remain opposed to the scheme, and you can read our formal response here.
The Helm

Situated near Oxenholme, just south east of Kendal, and although not a very high hill at 185m, it gives beautiful views of Morecambe Bay and over Kendal to the Lake District fells. Fell ponies and cattle help us with conservation grazing at the Helm.
It's Time To Save Roanhead - Response Guidance

A NEW planning application has been submitted for the major resort development proposed at Roanhead. It will still have a huge impact on this sensitive coastline, even with a reduced number of lodges. Please join us again to challenge the proposal. Previous responses won't count and new responses need to reflect latest plans.

Aerial Flight at Honister Slate Mine

We received the disappointing news that the Secretary of State will not ‘call in’ the proposed zip-wires at Honister and so the Authority’s approval stands. The Secretary of State is no longer required to give reasons for his decision.

High Borrowdale

High Borrowdale is situated 8.5 miles north of Kendal, where we've planted trees, hedges and created new upland hay meadows. The best way to access it is from the A6, south of Shap. There is open access at all times and if you can't physically visit it, why not take a virtual tour?
