Volunteers wanted to look after Thirlmere for a day

We are looking for lots of volunteers to give a day of their time at our Thirlmere Fell Care Day on Sunday 23^rd September. The mass-volunteering event offers the opportunity for those who love the Lake District to put something back into looking after, and learning about it, while having a day of physical fun and camaraderie fuelled by cake!

Ruth Kirk of Friends of the Lake District said, “Thirlmere has taken a bit of a bruising this year, both from the threat of major development which would have substantially altered its tranquil character, to the toppling of many trees from storms over on the western shore which is still restricting access.

“So we want people to join us to give a bit of time and care back to this special place. We’ve got some wonderful activities for people of all abilities to get involved with including dry stone walling, maintaining upland fell paths, red squirrel conservation and monitoring, woodland management training, a landscape art workshop or trying the Scandinavian activity of plogging: combining a gentle jog/walk with litter picking.”

Booking on activities is essential to ensure a place on the activity of your choice. Bookings will be taken on a first come-first served basis. The hub for the day will be Swirls Car Park. For more information and book online here.

Elterwater Quarry Adventure Attraction plans resubmitted

Just before Christmas, revised proposals were submitted for a visitor attraction at Elterwater Quarry. We have reviewed the plans, we remain opposed to the scheme, and you can read our formal response here.
The Helm

Situated near Oxenholme, just south east of Kendal, and although not a very high hill at 185m, it gives beautiful views of Morecambe Bay and over Kendal to the Lake District fells. Fell ponies and cattle help us with conservation grazing at the Helm.

High Borrowdale

High Borrowdale is situated 8.5 miles north of Kendal, where we've planted trees, hedges and created new upland hay meadows. The best way to access it is from the A6, south of Shap. There is open access at all times and if you can't physically visit it, why not take a virtual tour?
