Landscape charity Friends of the Lake District has been overwhelmed by the number of images submitted to its 2021 photography competition. This year’s event has received more than 600 images featuring stunning images of Lake District and Cumbria sent in by members of the public hoping to feature in its 2021 Christmas card collection and 2022 calendar.

This year’s competition featured a special ‘Reflections’ category, to include reflections on lakes, becks, pools, falls or other water features. The winning photo from this category, of Crummock Water by Andrew Locking, (above) will be displayed alongside the work of photographers Rosamund and John Macfarlane and artist Julian Cooper, in their ‘Lake District Reflections’ exhibition at Brockhole on Windermere in September.

There was also a ‘Dark Skies’ category again this year, celebrating the beauty of our night skies and complementing the charity’s Dark Skies Cumbria project to enhance and protect them. The winning photo of this category, of Buttermere (above) by Richard Jakobson, also came second in the reflections category, and will also be featured in the ‘Reflections’ exhibition, as Rosamund and John Macfarlane liked it so much.

Vanessa Rhoden, Fundraising and Marketing Manager at Friends of the Lake District,

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to this year’s competition. We know many people were unable to visit the Lake District during lockdown. As they start to return, it’s great to see the many fabulous shots they’ve taken of this stunning landscape. Picking the winners is always a difficult task, but this year was particularly hard. We'd like to say a huge thank you to everybody who took part and can’t wait to see the winning entries on our Christmas cards and calendars this autumn.”

Calendar images include views of Buttermere, Borrowdale, Crummockwater, Grisedale Pike, Derwentwater, and Newlands valley. The charity’s Christmas cards and calendars will be available to order from late September via its website at www.friendsofthelakedistrict.org.uk

All money raised from the sale of the cards and calendars goes towards supporting the Lake District and Cumbria’s world class landscapes and heritage.
