We'll be providing details of all of the 2016 events and activities that are successful in securing Discover Cumbria funding on this page so stay tuned.

If you have an idea for an event or activity or already have something planned, it may qualify for a Discover Cumbria grant. We're placing an emphasis on events and activies that help Cumbria get back on its feet after the flooding in some way, eg bring in visitors and spend. We will favour events being held in or near flood hit areas, especially the Keswick, Appleby, Kendal and Glenridding areas but will consider applications from anywhere in the county.

If you think your event may qualify or want to discuss an idea, follow the link for more information, application guidance and contact information.

"The Lake District by Night"-  Pop-up Exhibition & Activities

"The Lake District by Night Experience".  A combination of pop-up photography exhibitions and night time themed activities for families in locations close to the pop-up exhibitions.

25, 26, 27, 28, 29th August, 10am-4pm, Moot Hall Keswick. Free exhibition open to the public each day.

Disconnect with the natural world

Night time in its natural form is something both children and adults are becoming increasingly remote from in our society. People's experience of night time is largely being indoors in a lit room, disconnected from the primordial darkness outside.

That is a loss. Areas such as the Lake District are magical places where night time presents an entirely different mood and atmosphere to daytime. Sights, sounds and sensations treat us to a completely different perspective on an otherwise familiar world.

More details to follow...

Huge congratulations to the three of you!

Butterflies in Burton Day - 29th May 2015

The Butterflies in Burton day was co-ordinated by Kath Hayhurst. The morning session was taken by butterfly expert Reg Hesketh showing a series of films and explaining the lifestyle and habitats necessary for their survival. Each artist chose one example to paint. Later everyone transferred to the Quarry Reserve where Reg recounted that 25 different species had been seen. At the end of an enjoyable day, all paintings were completed in time for display at the annual Arts and Crafts exhibition.

Saturday 27th June - Community Work Day at Growing Well

Growing Well is an organic farm and mental health charity based at Low Sizergh Farm.  We work 6 acres, supported by people recovering from mental health problems.  Our produce is sold through cropshare, or vegetable bags, which means we grow a large variety of produce, some of it very unusual.

We opened our doors for a community volunteering day for anyone to come down and get involved in practical tasks on our site. This a day for anyone, from beginner to expert grower to get outdoors and enjoy getting a bit muddy!  Everyone of any age is welcome, however practically it is a walk (with a hill) onto site.

Working together on various horticultural tasks in the fields and polytunnels so this was a great opportunity to learn new skills (come armed with any questions!) and meet like minded people.

We provided tea, coffee and biscuits, plus a soup for lunch in one of our yurts with a wood burner.
