Landscape Grants

Friends of the Lake District has been giving grants to help the environment for over 70 years. We’ve helped to fund school nature areas, major woodland creation, events that provide opportunities for people to discover something new about the natural environment and the purchase of land for everyone to enjoy in the future.

Impacts of our Landscape Grant Scheme:

over 600 grants awarded to help enhance and safeguard the landscape, environment and cultural heritage of Cumbria
getting young people involved in the environment through school wildlife gardens
over £1 million spent on looking after and improving the landscape of Cumbria and the Lake District by the Friends, with local communities and other partners
Supporting constituted community groups, charities, not for profit organisations and schools in running innovative opportunities for people and communities to get outside, discover and enjoy something new about the natural environment

The grant funds small scale projects and works that will conserve and enhance the landscape (and within that flora and fauna, cultural heritage), connect people with it and aid their enjoyment of it. Projects must demonstrate a clear and positive benefit to the landscape of Cumbria. Support is open to charitable organisations, voluntary and community groups, schools, social enterprises and local councils or conservation agencies.

‘I am no expert in things owls or owlish, I just live next to some.' Frightened of the dark as a child, Polly listens to the owls at night and begins to see night time as a zone of possibilities. The owls teach her to listen to the sounds of the woods, and its inhabitants.
New Coniston carpark approved

We are disappointed that permission has been granted by the Lake District National Park Authority today for a new permanent car park on a greenfield site in Coniston.

Elterwater Quarry Adventure Attraction plans resubmitted

Just before Christmas, revised proposals were submitted for a visitor attraction at Elterwater Quarry. We have reviewed the plans, we remain opposed to the scheme, and you can read our formal response here.
The Helm

Situated near Oxenholme, just south east of Kendal, and although not a very high hill at 185m, it gives beautiful views of Morecambe Bay and over Kendal to the Lake District fells. Fell ponies and cattle help us with conservation grazing at the Helm.
It's Time To Save Roanhead - Response Guidance

A NEW planning application has been submitted for the major resort development proposed at Roanhead. It will still have a huge impact on this sensitive coastline, even with a reduced number of lodges. Please join us again to challenge the proposal. Previous responses won't count and new responses need to reflect latest plans.

Aerial Flight at Honister Slate Mine

We received the disappointing news that the Secretary of State will not ‘call in’ the proposed zip-wires at Honister and so the Authority’s approval stands. The Secretary of State is no longer required to give reasons for his decision.
What are the disadvantages of being in a National Park?
High Borrowdale

High Borrowdale is situated 8.5 miles north of Kendal, where we've planted trees, hedges and created new upland hay meadows. The best way to access it is from the A6, south of Shap. There is open access at all times and if you can't physically visit it, why not take a virtual tour?
