Land Manager's Diary: Read it here>
24th January 2022...

A misty and murky day did not dampen the enthusiasm of our volunteers out at High Borrowdale tree planting this week. We planted 200 trees along the riverside and one of our volunteers John also spread some birch and aspen seed he had collected specially on some of the exposed slopes in the allotment…. We look forward to the resulting forest!

If you’d like to come along and help, you can join us as a volunteer at High Borrowdale or on any of our other land by booking a place on one of our workparties scheduled throughout 2022. By booking with us we can keep you up to date with changes to the schedule or details of the day. It also helps us to plan the tasks and activities on our workparty days if we know the number of people attending. 2022 workparty schedule and BOOKING>

It was a positive day, not only due to the energy of the volunteers but as tree planting is about looking forward, creating new things. This is the start of a busy few months for us on our land at High Borrowdale with two exciting new projects getting underway.

Working with the Lake District National Park and their Farming in Protected Landscapes Scheme, in the next couple of weeks we will be installing 840m of new fencing which will enable us to create a new hedge. Not only will this create a new habitat, but it will provide connectivity between the woodland areas and also link them to the hay meadows. It will also act as a wind break and a slow the flow feature for any surface water in times of high rainfall. Planting the hedge begins on 8th February.

In March, we will be adding some supplementary plug plants to our beautiful meadows, giving more colour and diversity. More on that in future posts, but again if you want to join us in mid-March for planting, keep an eye on our website a little nearer the time as we make booking available for our upcoming workparties.
