It’s the busy season at Friends of the Lake District’s High Borrowdale site at the moment. Work is fast and furious to do the preparation work to get in 420 metres of new hedge. We are delighted to once again be working with Dan Boardley from DB Contracts.

Dan stepped in at a moment’s notice to help us out when our normal fencer gave backword to get a new double fence in for our new hedge. He has stripped out all of the old fence and with the help of his colleague Phil and Dexter the dog is now busy putting in strainer posts and wire.

At the same time, dedicated volunteer Charles was out with us on Friday getting everything ready for our volunteer day on wed when we will be planting the new hedge plants. We have cut up the remaining matting that was left from our erosion matting trials (link…) and will be pegging this down with bamboo pegs to help suppress grass and weeds. We have loaded up tubes and stakes and put them ready for planting and the holly plants we will be using are on site acclimatising!

It is exciting to be creating a new habitat on an already rich site and looking forward to longer term benefits for wildlife, landscape and slow the flow. We are grateful to have some funding from the Farming in Protected Landscapes scheme.
