Dark Skies Cumbria

Saving Our Night Skies

Cumbria's dark skies allow us to see the natural wonder of the stars, but are also critical for the health wildlife and our own natural well-being. Sadly light pollution in Cumbria is increasing each year, threatening to obscure our view of the stars and blinding and confusing animals so they can’t feed or find a mate. We need urgent action now to stop light pollution. Stargazers, photographers, wildlife lovers and local communities… please help.

A magical Dark Skies Night Walk in Holme Wood, Loweswater, took place last Wednesday 1 November, with talk, poetry, sounds and silence, light and darkness, and songs from the wonderful Quickbeam Singers, accompanied by National Trust Rangers.

The event was part of Friends of the Lake District's Cumbria Dark Skies Festival 2023, and in collaboration with the National Trust (North and West Lakes).

We had some fabulous feedback about the event:

'Thanks for the incredible night last week. It was magical.  We all loved it and thought the poetry, readings and songs were wonderful and heartfelt; they were of the place, and they brought the place alive. If I shut my eyes when the ladies were singing I could imagine time dissolving and being there millennia earlier.  The fells; the calls of owls; moon on the water; the tumuli.'

'What a  supremely memorable evening – most astonishing moonlit window in the weather to grace such an appreciative and convivial gathering – singers were quite superb.'

'Thank you for a lovely interesting evening last night, it was wonderful despite/because of the bits of rain.  Wasn’t Arwen’s bat song good?!'

'Many thanks for organising this evening, we enjoyed it thoroughly and appreciate the effort everyone went to.  The moon hanging over the lake was a nice touch.'

'Thank you so much for organising the evening. I so enjoyed it!'

'What an abundant life we lead here in beautiful Cumbria. Many thanks for a fabulous evening and these fantastic photos.'

'Thank you so much for a fantastic event.  We really enjoyed it.  What excellent luck with the weather as well.'

'The Dark Skies Loweswater walk on Wednesday evening: I'm sitting here with a big smile on my face remembering how much I enjoyed it!'

'Thank you so much - it was such a lovely event to be part of, and so beautiful to have the photos too.'

'How can we thank you enough for such a magical and wonderful Dark Skies evening?  It was simply the best and an evening to remember.  All the fascinating aspects of the occasion - the singers, the history, the poetry, the food, drink and even the weather.'
