Leaders' Landscape Training 2024Life of the hill bred Fell Pony Date: Friday 21st June Time: 10am - 4pm Session content: The Fell Pony is native to Cumbria and has roamed the northern fells for centuries. Semi-wild herds of fell ponies have helped create the landscape and are part of its heritage and history.There are no truly wild ponies in Britain anymore, and the term ‘semi-feral’ is more generally used to refer to privately-owned herds of ponies that live out all year round. These ponies may be handled only once or twice a year when the mares are brought to the stallion and when foals are weaned. We will visit one herd on the High Borrowdale fells and hear about the ecology of this unique breed, how they survive the harsh environment of the Cumbrian hills, the links between people and ponies throughout history, their role in conservation grazing and how they have shaped the landscape both past and present. Dependent on where the ponies are will determine how long a walk we have (between 5-12 miles). The route is along the bridleway to High Borrowdale, then on open fell, so it will be mixed terrain. We will have an ATV vehicle to shuttle people up the fell where needed but be prepared for uphill walking on rough terrain (tussocky grass and bog in places).
