Anniversary Celebrations & Annual General Meeting

We are pleased to invite you to our 90^th Anniversary Celebrations & Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Friends of the Lake District. This important event will provide an opportunity for our members (and supporters) to come together, celebrate all that has been achieved over the last 90 years, review our progress over the past 15 months and discuss our plans which will shape the future of our organisation.

Date: Friday 13^th September 2024

Time: 1.30pm – 6pm

Venue: Skiddaw Hotel, 31 Main Street, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 5BN

3pm Historic Parks of Keswick Walk

Join us for a guided tour of Keswick’s three historic parks, beginning in Hope, moving on to Crow, and ending at Fitz Park, where Friends of the Lake District came into being 90years ago. We’ll be marking the occasion with an anniversary photo!
The walk is almost entirely level although there is a short, sharp incline in one section and a few steps towards the end. You can remain at the hotel with some of our staff team if you prefer.

Please join us for a celebration of our 90^th year as THE charity that works to protect and enhance our beautiful Lake District and Cumbrian landscapes.

Getting to the Skiddaw Hotel

The Skiddaw Hotel is in the centre of Keswick: 31 Main Street, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 5BN.

Parking (chargeable) is available at the Central Car Park, directly behind the hotel. The postcode for the car park is CA12 5DF.

Other car parks are available in the town centre. Click here for more information.

Regular bus services to Keswick include the 555 (from Kendal) and the X4/X5 (from Penrith).

Elterwater Quarry Adventure Attraction plans resubmitted

Just before Christmas, revised proposals were submitted for a visitor attraction at Elterwater Quarry. We have reviewed the plans, we remain opposed to the scheme, and you can read our formal response here.
The Helm

Situated near Oxenholme, just south east of Kendal, and although not a very high hill at 185m, it gives beautiful views of Morecambe Bay and over Kendal to the Lake District fells. Fell ponies and cattle help us with conservation grazing at the Helm.
It's Time To Save Roanhead - Response Guidance

A NEW planning application has been submitted for the major resort development proposed at Roanhead. It will still have a huge impact on this sensitive coastline, even with a reduced number of lodges. Please join us again to challenge the proposal. Previous responses won't count and new responses need to reflect latest plans.

Aerial Flight at Honister Slate Mine

We received the disappointing news that the Secretary of State will not ‘call in’ the proposed zip-wires at Honister and so the Authority’s approval stands. The Secretary of State is no longer required to give reasons for his decision.
What are the disadvantages of being in a National Park?
High Borrowdale

High Borrowdale is situated 8.5 miles north of Kendal, where we've planted trees, hedges and created new upland hay meadows. The best way to access it is from the A6, south of Shap. There is open access at all times and if you can't physically visit it, why not take a virtual tour?
