With apologies to Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan

It’s Christmas Eve my friend
There’s greetings I should send.
As I look o’er the fells
And hear the sound of bells.
So many views to choose,
So much we mustn’t lose.
There can be no excuse
For damage and abuse.

Moorside has gone away,
No powerlines to defray.
I’ve got a feeling
There’s more threats still to come.
So Happy Christmas,
I’m glad that the
Friends of the Lake District
Are on the landscape’s side.

Our climate
Is changing.
Our world rearranging
We must take a grip
Before it’s too late

Our lakes and our hills
Simply fill me with thrills.
They promise me
Pleasures for every sense.

A business transaction
That calls for “attractions”
Starts off reactions.
It’s sad we can’t value
The assets we’ve got
We’re not being snooty
About Natural Beauty.
Our Parks are not simply
A great beauty spot

To the boys of the LDNP choir
We sing “Sandford Rules must stay”
And the bells are ringing
Out for Christmas day

Dark Skies
Please our eyes
They are not a surprise.
A great reason to love
The Heavens above.

The Uplands
Post-Brexit,
We hope nothing wrecks it.
But nobody knows
What is
Coming our way

To the boys of the LDNP choir
We sing “For Public Goods we’ll pay”.
And the bells are ringing
Out for Christmas day

We’re asking the question
“So what is congestion?”
There’s too many cars
In too little space
We want people to come here
From climber to sightseer
But without doing damage
To this special place

To the boys of the LDNP choir
We sing “Traffic’s in the way”
And the bells are ringing
Out for Christmas day
