The results of research into public appetite for change to the way they travel in the Lake District has been published.

People do want to travel differently, to protect the environment and to see fewer cars on the road, to make space for bikes and walking. Some visitors are prepared to travel differently on holiday. Local peoples want to support an integrated, affordable, accessible public transport system.

Research based on online surveys and interviews with more than 3000 people, as well as focus groups, which was part-funded by Friends of the Lake District, and carried out by ACTion with Communities in Cumbria, has found that 81% said they would be willing to travel without their car on holiday and 46% were concerned about the impact of their travel choices on the environment.

In face-to-face surveys carried out locally nearly 60% would like to see an integrated, cheaper transport system in the Lake District.

Many respondents also indicated that charging for access to busy places at busy times would fund improvements in services for all.
