Friends of the Lake District

Friends of the Lake District

We are an independent charity and the only membership organisation dedicated to protecting and enhancing Cumbria's landscapes. We believe that Cumbria offers some of the most spectacular and precious landscapes in the UK. We take action to protect and conserve the natural beauty of these landscapes for the benefit of visitors, local communities, wildlife and habitats. We run projects and events to celebrate the landscape and offer opporunities for everyone to engage with all the landscape has to offer.

We work to secure a landscape that is:

  • Beautiful, diverse, locally distinctive, tranquil and environmentally healthy;
  • Conserved and enhanced;
  • Accessible and enjoyed by all.

We work to ensure that people:

  • Are inspired by the beauty and diversity of the landscape;
  • Have an understanding of how the landscape has been shaped;
  • Care for and help look after the landscape, both for its own sake and for the benefits it brings to people’s lives.

    We received the disappointing news that the Secretary of State will not ‘call in’ the proposed zip-wires at Honister and so the Authority’s approval stands. The Secretary of State is no longer required to give reasons for his decision.
