The red squirrel is the UK’s only native squirrel species, easily recognized by its reddish-brown fur, white belly, and large ear tufts in winter.
Our native red squirrels are endangered and becoming ever more rare in England. We’re lucky here in the Lake District to still have red squirrels but they are under constant threat and need our help to survive. We provide nuts and seeds for feed stations and manage our woodlands to give them the best chance of survival. Our feed stations need regular cleaning to reduce the risk of squirrel pox contamination, a disease which kills 99% of reds that catch it.
