Local community invited to large scale conservation day in Sedbergh and the Howgills

Volunteers are wanted to take part in landscape conservation charity, Friends of the Lake District’s latest big volunteering event – Sedbergh and Howgills Fell Care Day on Thursday 12 November.

Come and join the local community and get your hands dirty doing a range of outdoor tasks to help look after this beautiful local landscape.

Kelley Sproston-Heath, Engagement Officer for Friends of the Lake District said, “Sedbergh is nestled beneath the Howgill Fells in a much-loved valley in east Cumbria, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. We’re inviting people, whatever your age or ability, to come and spend a day helping to look after it, doing something worthwhile for the Cumbrian landscape. We can’t guarantee the weather, but we can promise fresh air, fun, company and most importantly, lots of cake!”

Friends of the Lake District is working in partnership with Sedbergh Parish Council, St Andrew’s Church, Sedbergh Community Tree Planting Group, Sedbergh School, Settlebeck School, Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and Yorkshire Dales Millenium Trust to host the event.

Many different conservation tasks

Conservation activities range from taster dry stone walling, wildflower planting, hedge and tree planting, to scrub clearance, and path and bird box maintenance, and will take place at various locations including St Andrew’s churchyard; Queen’s Garden; Stay Howgills, High Branthwaite, Castle Haw and Sedbergh Golf Club.

The event begins at Sedbergh People’s Hall Event Hub at 9am, where people will be able to choose which tasks they would like to join (on a first-come, first-served basis) before heading off to the different activities. Some tasks will be walking distance from the People’s Hall, others are a short drive away. We will end with tea and cake back at the Event Hub at 3pm.
