Scotmid Co-op volunteers lend a hand at new site

Last week, we welcomed a fantastic team of Scotmid Co-op staff and members to our new land at Scales, near Threlkeld, for a hands-on day of conservation and countryside skills.

Working alongside members of our staff team and dedicated volunteers, the group spent the day learning the traditional craft of dry stone walling before putting their new skills into practice. Following a step-by-step demonstration and guidance from experienced wallers, the team worked together to repair a 3.5-metre gap in an existing dry-stone wall, helping to restore an important boundary at the top of the site.

The weather certainly reminded us we were in Cumbria, with a few drizzly spells passing through during the day. Thankfully, conditions were kind overall, allowing everyone to stay focused on the task in hand while enjoying the fresh air and stunning surroundings.

Rebuilding dry stone walls

What stood out most was the enthusiasm and energy of the Scotmid group. From the first stone to the final placement, the team embraced the challenge with great humour, determination and teamwork. There was plenty of laughter throughout the day, and it was wonderful to see everyone gaining confidence as the wall gradually took shape. By the end of the session, the group had successfully rebuilt the section of wall, leaving a lasting contribution to our new site.

Dry stone walls are an iconic feature of the Lake District, providing vital boundaries, supporting biodiversity, and helping to preserve the character of our cherished countryside. By learning about and helping maintain these traditional structures, participants gain a deeper understanding of the landscape and the importance of caring for it for future generations.
