About Greenbank Wood

Greenbank is small 1.5ha hectare woodland opposite the University of Cumbria’s campus library on Nook Lane in Ambleside. It contains some large veteran beech and Scots pine dating back to the nineteenth century that make great habitats for many woodland fungi, insects, birds and red squirrels, and enhance the woodland setting of Ambleside itself.

Volunteer in Greenbank Wood

Our work here

We conducted a detailed tree survey to map and age the veteran trees and help with the management of the wood and have since done some understory planting of trees and shrubs to give more nuts and berries for wildlife. We remove invasive and beech to try and keep the woodland diverse and resilient. Our work has helped enhance the landscape, created new wildlife habitats, helped slow the flow of water in the catchment. We’ve also run a red squirrel survey and introduced grey squirrel control and run a lichen survey to identify the health and diversity of the wood. Our volunteers help us with woodland management.
