Temperate rainforests

Did you know we have rainforests in Cumbria? Temperate rainforests thrive on high rainfall, humidity and mild temperatures but these very specific conditions are surprisingly rare. Mosses, ferns and lichens cloak trees and rocks, creating landscapes found in only a few places on Earth. They once covered about 20% of the UK, but today that number is less than 1%.

Restoring a rainforest

We’re launching an ambitious project to restore a precious Lake District rainforest—and we need your support.

Despite their small footprint, these habitats teem with life, punching way above their weight. Their unique microclimates support exceptional biodiversity, including species found nowhere else beyond Cumbrian woodlands. But they’re under threat from invasive species, disease, pollution and climate change. Without urgent action, we could lose them forever.

Our successful restoration of 17 acres of Rusland rainforest has shown what’s possible. Now we’ve been entrusted with adjoining land—expanding our stewardship to 72 acres. This is a rare, time‑sensitive opportunity to revive an irreplaceable ecosystem, boost biodiversity and lock away carbon.

“The thought of a rainforest in Cumbria enchants and inspires people. We have a real opportunity to restore these ancient landscapes and protect rare wildlife. Let’s save them while we still can.”  Jan Darrall, Policy Officer (Land)

Restoration here could even pave the way for the return of pine martens, whose presence supports the recovery of the endangered red squirrel. To make this happen, we need to carry out habitat surveys, species monitoring, veteran tree care, glade creation and invasive-species control.

We’re on the brink of losing these extraordinary rainforests – but you can help save them. Will you donate today?

Don’t forget – you can double your donations by supporting us via Big Give’s Earth Raise event (22 – 29 April)
