It’s time for a spring clean

We’re hoping lots of people across the county will help us with an annual spring clean on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 April.

Now in its ninth year, the Great Cumbrian Litter Pick aims to bring schools, community groups, organisations and businesses together to pick up litter through organised events across the county, or by taking individual action. In doing so, we hope to highlight the problem of litter and the vast amount of voluntary work that goes into keeping one of the most beautiful parts of the country clean.

Last year 245 people took part in the litter pick, walking 133km and collecting 269 large bin bags full of rubbish.

Kelley Sproston-Heath, engagement lead for Friends of the Lake District, said: “The Great Cumbrian Litter Pick takes place over two days, but many of the people who take part regularly litter pick throughout the year, whether that’s with a litter picking group, work, school or individually, communities are constantly tidying up after others. There’s no quick and easy solution to the litter problem but the more we can spread the message of ‘leave no trace’ the better. One way to demonstrate this is by the actions of an incredible army of volunteers across Cumbria.”

Anyone can take part in The Great Cumbrian Litter Pick. For example, by making it part of your regular dog walk, a family day out, or organising or joining a community litter pick. We’ve produced an interactive map showing all the public litter picks happening in the county as part of the Great Cumbrian Litter Pick. Use the map below to find a litter pick group participating in this year’s event. Click on a ‘bin’ icon for contact details and please do get in touch with the group organiser directly if you’d like to join them. (A few of the litter pick groups on the map will be marked as ‘private groups’ which cannot be signed up for).

There’s still time to register a litter pick, so if you have any questions or want to register, please contact Kelley Sproston-Heath via email at kelley.sproston-heath@fld.org.uk.
