Orton Scar Guided Walk

Wednesday 13th May, 2026

Explore Orton Scar with us

Wednesday 13 May 11am – 3pm

A moderate 5-mile walk up to Beacon Hill above Orton and back via Knott Lane. A chance to enjoy the spring wildflowers in the meadows and verges; to appreciate the area’s geology including limestone pavements and fossils; and see evidence of settlement from Neolithic times onwards. If we’re lucky we should get some panoramic views too.

Terrain: Public rights of way across fields, open access land and quiet country roads. There are no stiles but some of the ground may be muddy and rough underfoot. It involves a gradual climb of about 500 ft.

This walk will be led by David Evans.

Tickets are free to members of Friends of the Lake District (join here if you are not already a member) or £5 for non-members.

What to wear and what to bring

Check the weather forecast. Waterproofs if it looks like rain. Sun hat and sunscreen if it looks like sun. Sturdy footwear (walking boots or similar). Please also bring water and a snack for lunch.

Dogs are permitted but must be kept under control and on a lead at all times.

More details about the walk will be sent via email when you book but if you have any questions in advance please email events@fld.org.uk.

About these walks

This is one of a series of walks revealing the landscape and heritage of the Westmorland Dales, in the northwest corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The area was the focus of a landscape partnership scheme which ran from 2019 to 2024, grant funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and led by Friends of the Lake District.
