Newbiggin-on-Lune Guided Walk

Wednesday 8th July, 2026

Explore Newbiggin-on-Lune with us

Wednesday 8 July 2pm – 4.30pm

A gentle 3-mile walk along the disused railway line, now part of Smardale Nature Reserve, to Smardale Bridge, then back via Friar’s Bottom to the village. The wildflowers along the old railway line should be in their prime and there will be plenty of other interest too including archaeological sites, limestone and sandstone geology, and views into Smardale and up to the Howgills.

Terrain: Paths and tracks along the old railway line and across fields, and along quiet country roads. There are no stiles but some of the ground may be muddy and rough underfoot. There is gentle climb of about 150 ft on the way back.

This walk will be led by David Evans.

Tickets are free to members of Friends of the Lake District (join here if you are not already a member) or £5 for non-members.

What to wear and what to bring

Check the weather forecast. Waterproofs if it looks like rain. Sun hat and sunscreen if it looks like sun. Sturdy footwear (walking boots or similar). Please also bring water and a snack if required.

Dogs are permitted but must be kept under control and on a lead at all times.

More details about the walk will be sent via email when you book but if you have any questions in advance please email events@fld.org.uk.

About these walks

This is one of a series of walks revealing the landscape and heritage of the Westmorland Dales, in the northwest corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The area was the focus of a landscape partnership scheme which ran from 2019 to 2024, grant funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and led by Friends of the Lake District.
