Hedge Planting at Barkin House Farm, Gatebeck, nr Kendal

Help us create new habitat by planting hedges!

Come join us for a day of hedgerow planting surrounded by beautiful Cumbrian landscapes. Hedgerows provide multiple benefits; habitat for wildlife, shelter and food for livestock, and ecosystem services for us humans like carbon storage and natural flood management. By volunteering you can help us reverse hedgerow decline bit by bit, and bring hedgerows back into our countryside.

• Location: Barkin House Farm, Gatebeck, Kendal LA8 0HX what3words:///suspends.gaps.lung Comes up as ‘Bamber R R & M’ on google maps. Parking is on the hard standing around the farm houses. A member of staff in hi-vis will be on site.
• Date: Saturday 7 November
• Time: 10am – 3pm
• Activity suitability: 10+
• Activity grade: Medium. We will be digging holes and planting trees for much of the day, sometimes in bad weather or exposed areas, which can get quite tiring.
• Please wear: Walking boots with ankle support or wellies, waterproof trousers and jacket, thermals (recommended) and warm clothing and socks, thin liner gloves (recommended).
• Please bring: A lunch box and water bottle.
• Toilet & hand washing facilities: There is a toilet on site in the house.
• Details: The session will start with an introduction from Naomi (Friends Nature Recovery Officer) where you will find out a bit about our Hedges & Edges project. She will then do a demonstration on how to plant the hedge trees and go over health and safety considerations. Then you’ll get started planting the hedge! There will be a break around 12:30pm for lunch and aim to be packed up ready to go at 3pm approx. Hot drinks and cakes will be provided on the day. We try our best to cater for different diets and allergies but do be aware that we may not be able to cater for everyone.
