Within these fields on the edge of Little Asby Common, we’re restoring a hay meadow, running dry stone walling volunteer sessions and managing land for breeding waders.
About Mazonwath
In 2009, we bought three fields at Mazonwath, next to Little Asby Common to help with the stock management of the common. It also includes common rights on the Common.
Our work here
Mazonwath is managed in an environmentally friendly way as part of a Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, including one field managed for breeding waders such as curlew and lapwing. We’ve planted individual trees to provide more cover in the area and encourage a diversity of species. In 2022 as part of our Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership project, we worked with Cumbria Wildlife Trust to restore the top field to 6ha of upland hay meadow. We are also part of the Cumbria Seed Bank project which is aiming to collect rare seed for the future and seed rare plants in safe places for the future. We run a monthly programme of dry stone walling on site, which includes opportunities for people to come and learn this rural skill.

Visiting Mazonwath
Mazonwath is on the southern edge of Little Asby Common (link). There is no parking on site but there are limited spaces to leave your car nearby, but please park responsibly and not on grass verges etc. The road across Little Asby Common passes by Mazonwath at What3Words: ///sway.fizzled.flaunting.
