Postcard From the Lakes: July 2024 Welcome to our latest Postcard From the Lakes Read it here: A Postcard from the Lakes - July 2024 Header image: 'The Bishop of Barf' by Ron Kenyon Welcome to the July edition of Postcard from the Lakes. We're sending this to you a little earlier this month because we wanted to share a video of our recent hustings event before Thursday's General Election. At our Hustings for Cumbria’s Landscapes, which took place on Monday 24 June at the Ambleside Parish Centre, candidates standing in the constituency of Westmorland and Lonsdale faced questions from a packed audience. Issues such as sewage in Windermere, climate change, nature-friendly farming, public transport, housing, and hill farming culture were all debated. There was also a question which related to our recent decision to seek a Judicial Review of the planning approval for the Elterwater Quarry attraction. Talking of which, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everybody who responded to our email last week about Elterwater. We’ve had tremendous support for our decision to seek a Judicial Review over the approval of the Zip World attraction in the Langdales. It wasn't easy for us to question the decision of our friends at the Lake District National Park Authority, and it was reassuring to see so many positive messages and generous donations from people when they learnt of the news. If you missed that email, there are some details about the Judicial Review in this month’s Postcard. Finally, I'm hoping that, when you cast your vote on Thursday (if you haven't already done so through a postal vote), you keep in mind the landscape issues that we highlighted in our recent Manifesto for Cumbria's Landscapes and which were debated at the hustings. And I hope that whoever is in government after the election will prioritise landscape, nature and the environment in the years to come. With our very best wishes, Michael Hill, CEOFriends of the Lake District Read it here: A Postcard from the Lakes - July 2024 If you've missed any editions, you can still read all of our postcards here We’ll also be sharing updates on our social media accounts, so make sure you’re following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Manage Cookie Preferences
