Landscape protection
Cumbria’s landscapes are under threat. Help us protect them.
Our mission
At Friends of the Lake District, our mission is to secure landscapes that are tranquil, rich in cultural heritage and environmentally healthy. That’s why we challenged the Lake District National Park Authority’s decision to approve a major adventure attraction at Elterwater Quarry and why we supported the Save Roanhead campaign against a development on the Furness peninsula.
Help us keep up the fight
Seeking a judicial review of the Elterwater zip wire wasn’t a decision we took lightly. But the threat to the area’s tranquillity and a desire to draw a line in the sand against forms of tourism that devalue the special qualities and cultural heritage of the Lake District meant that this was a fight we could not shy away from.
Thanks to your support we fought with everything we had. Sadly, the court did not rule in our favour, but this is not the end. More threats are always be on the horizon — and it’s likely that some will have even greater potential to damage the tranquillity we treasure. We may have lost this battle, but we haven’t lost the war.
Indeed, at the end of November we learnt the fantastic news that the application for 230 lodges at Roanhead on the Furness peninsula had been refused. We worked closely with members of the local Save Roanhead group, and many other organisations, to campaign for this wonderful result.
With your support, we will continue to:
- Stand against inappropriate developments
- Campaign for stronger protections of our cherished landscapes
- Defend the tranquillity that makes the Lake District so special

Together, we can protect what we love.
