Award winning local photographers, John and Rosamund Macfarlane, and highly acclaimed artist Julian Cooper have joined forces to bring a visually stunning exhibition to Brockhole on Windermere this September with all profits from any sales going back into the landscapes themselves via ‘Friends of the Lake District’, a charity that works to protect and enhance the landscapes of the Lake District and Cumbria.

‘Lake District Reflections’ is an exhibition featuring photography and painting which explores lakes, mountain becks and waterfalls from under and over the water surface. It opens at the Gaddum Gallery in the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole on Windermere on Saturday 4^th September and runs until Sunday 10^th October 2021. The exhibition will be free to enter with the gallery opening daily from 10am to 5pm. 

The Lake District has been shaped by water over millennia, resulting in the dramatic, much-loved and often photographed landscapes of fells, valleys and lakes. When we look at the landscape, we often look out over waterscapes but does that mean we overlook them? The exhibition explores what can be discovered when we look onto and into water, focussing on the three themes of over, under and ice.

OVER. Water is the natural reflecting surface of the Lake District and the mirror for its beautiful landscapes.

UNDER. Much of our mountain ‘landscape' is hidden below the surface of becks, pools and waterfalls – the ‘subscape’. Whereas the rocks and flora we see have been affected by wind, rain, ice and storm, the under-rocks and beck bottom are sculptured by the shifting of stone, the grind of gravel and the rub of flow and flood.

ICE. In the depths of a cold winter, the mountain becks and waterfalls can take on a different guise. Whipped by wind, tumbled by fall and flow, water droplets splash, spit and spray onto edge and rock, transforming them into transient ice sculptures and shuckles (a Cumbrian term for icicles). 

All photographs in the exhibition will be available to purchase with all profits being donated to 'Friends of the Lake District'.
