Terms and Conditions of our Grant Awards Expand GrantsGrants are available on the following basis: There is a total pot of £60,000 to spend over the course of three years with a maximum grant of £5,000 for any one project Grant awards will normally be within the range of £500 - £3,000 per project, and up to £1,000 for events We will require applicants to have at least 25% match funding in cash or volunteer time; unskilled volunteer time is valued at £50 per day, skilled volunteer time at £150 per day, professional volunteer time at £350 per day Other sources of grant can act as match funding including the Yorkshire Dales National Park’s Sustainable Development Fund and the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust’s Roger Stott Community Fund but not the Friends of the Lake District Landscape Grants (which has very similar criteria) Grants will be subject to assessment against other applications and to ensure that we get a good spread across the area and across different organisations, so no funding is guaranteed even if projects meet the above criteria You will be required to sign a Grants Acceptance Agreement stating that your project will meet the Westmorland Dales aims and which outlines the terms and conditions of your grant. For larger grants, reports will also be required at key milestone points. Payments will be made (by electronic means) on completion of the project, or in stages if agreed for larger projects, and satisfactory completion of a project reporting form, before and after pictures, evidence of promotion, etc. We reserve the right to reclaim grant monies if the project is not carried out as agreed

Expand Grant application process: If you are interested in submitting a grant application please do contact us first. It may be that your project is already covered by funding within one of the scheme’s other projects. We can also advise you on your application and guide you through the process Please ensure that when you submit your application it is a strong as it can be with match funding in place, supporting evidence and a clear idea of when you can commence; if not we may have to defer a decision and ask you to submit further information There are quarterly deadlines each year which will be on the last Friday of the month in February, May, August and November; in 2022 they will be: Friday 27th May Friday 26th August Friday 25th November Each application will then be considered by a small panel drawn from the Friends of the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority The decisions will then be reported to the Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership Board at its meetings in July, October, January and April, after which the decision will be confirmed At that point you will be asked to complete a grant acceptance form and agree a programme and reporting requirements with the Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership team Anyone here at the Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership team should be able to help you if you’re interested in applying so please do give us a ring on 01539 756620 or come to see us at our offices at Tebay. What will the grant NOT fund? Expand We will not fund: Individual applicants. Works on private land where there is no public access or benefit Retrospective works Ongoing maintenance e.g. grass cutting Village halls or other community buildings unless there is a clear heritage benefit Applicants who have a bad track record Grants for land purchase Modern signposts or other infrastructure Formal children’s playgrounds and equipment Grants for a repeat project or event Projects which conflict with the policy principles of key partner organisations including the Friends of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority e.g. permanent fell fencing, infrastructure in the open countryside Core costs such as staff time, office rent, office equipment, etc. Projects already benefitting from Westmorland Dales funding or normally funded by other public sources, e.g. Countryside Stewardship, Forestry Commission grants. More than one application from the same applicant in the same year
What WILL the grant fund? Our grants in the past have covered broad areas. The most important thing is that they must contribute to the landscape and its enjoyment in some way. Expand We can fund projects which: Improve, restore or enhance the landscape, natural or cultural heritage of the area Research, interpret, celebrate or raise awareness of its landscape and heritage Improve opportunities for people to connect with the landscape, access and enjoy the area, especially for those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so Improve health and wellbeing in the outdoors. Promote participation and training in traditional rural skills Involve the local community and/or volunteers Projects may include: Access – footpath enhancement, new links, development of walks or interpretation Town and village greens – management plans, restoration, new features e.g. seats, bulbs Local heritage features – bridges, milestones, sheepfolds, wash-folds, cast iron signposts Archaeology – including surveys, research, restoration Walls, hedges, flora and fauna – surveys, restoration, enhancement Local histories, place and field names, folklore, etc. New events, additions to existing events and/or celebrations focusing on landscape, flora and fauna, land management, cultural heritage School and educational activities Local food initiatives Interpretation of local heritage – leaflets, websites, art projects, etc.
Criteria General criteria for grant eligibility Expand In order to be eligible for a grant, your organisation must have a bank account and formal terms of reference, and your project must: Be located within or demonstrate clear links to the Westmorland Dales scheme area Help reveal, conserve or sustain the area’s heritage Enable people to connect with and enjoy its heritage and landscape Be accessible to the public Demonstrate at least 25% match funding – cash and/or volunteer time Show a clear long-term legacy in how it will be maintained and continue to be of benefit Have consent of the landowner and relevant permissions if needed, e.g. planning. Acknowledge the support of the Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership Scheme and the funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund in all promotion and publicity
