David Birkett

David Birkett is possibly the most famous of all Lake District climbers. His portfolio of climbing successes include numerous first ascents and "E9" climbs, many in his much loved home of the Lake District.

David is also a keen dry stone waller and has supported Friends' work in preserving this important rural skill.

Leaders' Landscape Training: Life of the hill bred Fell Pony

The Fell Pony is native to Cumbria and have roamed the Northern Fells for centuries. The semi-wild herds of Fell Ponies have helped create the landscape and are part of the heritage and history of the area.

State of Nature Report

We were extremely disappointed to read last week that the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world according to the 2023 State of Nature Report. Human activity and the effects of climate change are having the biggest impact on nature loss, habitat loss and degradation.

Elterwater Quarry Adventure Attraction plans resubmitted

Just before Christmas, revised proposals were submitted for a visitor attraction at Elterwater Quarry. We have reviewed the plans, we remain opposed to the scheme, and you can read our formal response here.

A NEW planning application has been submitted for the major resort development proposed at Roanhead. We received the disappointing news that the Secretary of State will not ‘call in’ the proposed zip-wires at Honister and so the Authority’s approval stands. The Secretary of State is no longer required to give reasons for his decision.
