Great Landscapes Festival 2022 Homepage>

Join Kay our Landscape Engagement Officer as she shows you around our Hows Wood property pointing out wildlife as we go, discussing how we’ve restored the ancient native woodland and the future for managing woodlands.

Walk difficulty: Moderate. Rough terrain and some uphill sections - Meeting at Dalegarth Station car park we’ll do a circular walk starting through fields before dropping down to Hows Wood finishing with a short walk back along the road (see map).

Walk length: Approximately 3 miles / 4.8km

Hows Wood is situated in upper Eskdale and covers 20 acres (8 hectares). We bought the wood from the Forestry Commission in 1987 to restore the ancient native woodland and as a way of showcasing the way forward for managing woodlands. With the assistance of a Woodland Grant from the Forestry Commission the conifers were removed in 1994. The boundaries were restored to keep out livestock and deer by re-building the dry stone walls; a Bark Peelers Hut was conserved and a circular walk waymarked.
