Use of cookies by the Friends of the Lake District

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer by websites that you visit. They are widely used in order to make websites work, or work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owners of the site.  Cookies do lots of different jobs, like letting you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences, product ordering and generally improve the user experience. Third Party cookies can be used to help track users visits to enhance the overall browsing experience of a site.

They can be classed as necessary (i.e. essential to function of the website), or non-essential such as for statistical or marketing purposes.

Cookies may be either "persistent" cookies or "session" cookies: a persistent cookie will be stored by a web browser and will remain valid until its set expiry date, unless deleted by the user before the expiry date; a session cookie, on the other hand, will expire at the end of the user session, when the web browser is closed.

Cookies do not typically contain any information that personally identifies a user, but personal information that we store about you may be linked to the information stored in and obtained from cookies.

How do I change my cookie settings?

If you select ‘Accept Cookies’ then our standard cookies will be used. These include “essential” cookies, as well as additional cookies including those that allow us to use website analytics to understand more about our website visitors.

If, subsequently, you would like to amend you cookie settings then most web browsers allow some control of most cookies through the browser settings. To find out more about cookies, including how to see what cookies have been set, visit www.aboutcookies.org or www.allaboutcookies.org.

Find out how to manage cookies on popular browsers:

To find information relating to other browsers, visit the browser developer's website.

To opt out of being tracked by Google Analytics across all websites, visit http://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Updates to our Cookie Policy coming soon

Friends of the Lake District is in the process of implementing further functionality with regard to changing and editing your cookie preferences.  In conjunction with our website provider Raising IT, we aim to develop and implement enhanced functionality in line with ICO (Information Commissioner Office) and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) guidance to allow an option to Accept or Decline cookies when prompted, replacing the current ‘Accept’ cookies option.  The newer selection will have the following effect:

If you select ‘Accept Cookies’ then our standard cookies will be used. These include “essential” cookies, as well as additional cookies including those that allow us to use website analytics to understand more about our website visitors.

If you select the ‘Decline Cookies’ option it will mean that no cookies will be used on the site apart from session cookies and a cookie so that the bar will no longer appear when you are browsing the site - these are “essential” cookies for the website functionality.

If you do not select either ‘Accept’ or ‘Decline’ then no cookies will be used on the site apart from session cookies.

We are also looking to implement functionality which will allow you to update your cookie settings at any time from our Cookie Policy wording page rather than relying on your website browser functionality to achieve this.

If you have any queries about Cookies used on our website, please email us at [email protected]
