The lakes in this area are so significant they are what give this place its name. The Lake District is home to the longest and the deepest lakes in the country - Windermere and Wastwater. As well as lakes, there are hundreds of stunning tarns dotting the landscape. The lakes are not just things of beauty; they have significant recreational benefits for those who enjoy walking round them, wild swimming or sailing. They also serve important practical functions such as providing habitats for many rare species and drinking water for the inhabitants of Manchester and Cumbria. With so many demands on this valuable resource, protecting our water is an important priority for Friends of the Lake District.
This project worked with schools around Windermere to identify what tranquillity is and where it can be found and ran public events for locals and visitors to highlight and introduce people to opportunities for tranquil discovery around Windermere. Read more
