We'd like to invite you to Little Asby Common, near Orton on Wednesday 18th January, to witness the spectacular ballet of murmurating starlings as the sun sets.

Little Asby Common is owned by Friends of the Lake District and now lies within the extended Yorskhire Dales National Park. It’s one of the locations throughout Cumbria where the birds put on this amazing display throughout the winter as dusk draws in.

Jan Darrall, Policy Officer who manages the land said,

“As well as watching the starlings dance, we will have an expert birder on hand to tell us more about the wildlife on the Common and at Sunbiggin Tarn.

“It’s a great chance to learn more about why Little Asby Common is such a special place and how it will shortly become part of the Heritage Lottery Funded 'Hidden Landscapes' Project. We’ll also be providing the customary Friends cake as refreshment!”

Little Asby Common can be reached via the C3070 from Raisebeck to Little Asby , or the C3074 from Newbiggin-on-Lune. The grid ref of the joining of these two roads is 090686 (OL19 Explorer map Howgill Fells). There are no direct bus services across the common, but buses from Appleby and Kirkby Stephen may pass nearby.

Please park by the cattle grid by Sunbiggin Tarn and let us know you’re coming by booking through our event page:
