In the autumn of 2020, children in the Westmorland Dales explored the landscape through land art. We worked with Kate Lynch from 'We are Team' and land artists ‘Stomping Ground’ and 6 local primary schools using Land Art creations to celebrate local landmarks and nature.

This film showcases their work and brings the amazing work of these schools together in this unifying and joyous project, celebrating the Westmorland Dales. We hope this short film brings you some much needed colour and optimism in these difficult times.

Workshops were facilitated by Kate Lynch from ‘We are Team’ and land artists ‘Stomping Ground’ working with six local primary schools using Land Art creations to celebrate local landmarks and nature.  Orton C of E School, Crosby Ravensworth C of E School, Asby Endowed School, Tebay Primary, Shap CE Primary and Kirkby Stephen Primary School all took part in the project.

Children created collages used natural materials, using them like a paint brush, creating beautiful art pieces.  During these sessions children began first by creating individual art pieces, helping to develop their skills and fire their imagination; the project culminating in a final group piece.

 “We created this project to give children an opportunity to get outside and gain a true sense of the place in which they live, the Westmorland Dales. It was especially rewarding to provide the chance for the children to spend time with each other in an outdoor setting at a time when opportunities had been so curtailed by wider events.

“We must thank all of the children and teachers at our fantastic local Primary Schools who enabled this to happen. The schools worked so hard to maintain a sense of normality whilst keeping children safe during this time.

“We hope that everybody enjoys the short film, the artwork was fantastic!”
