Friends of the Lake District’s county-wide litter pick – the Great Cumbrian Litter Pick takes place next week on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th May.

The event is an opportunity not only to clear up the county but spread the message to #leavenotrace in our beautiful landscape.

Last year 75 litter picks took place across Cumbria in two days, as part of the Great Cumbrian Litter Pick, collecting over 500 bags of litter. Litter picks last year ranged from divers and canoeists picking litter from the bottom of Windermere to a group picking litter all the way to the top of Scafell Pike. We hope to continue this amazing effort this year and to bring people together to take community action for a cleaner Cumbria.

Litter picks this year are all over Cumbria, from Cockermouth to Penrith and Arnside and Heysham, and include a litter pick around the becks of Ullswater, and litter pick at Ford Park Run on Saturday morning in Ulverston.

Kay Andrews, of Friends of the Lake District said: “At the end of 2020, we commissioned Keep Britain Tidy to research why people litter and recommending interventions that we can trial to influence behaviour change. There’s no quick and easy solution to the litter problem but while we work on ways to educate and communicate more widely and effectively to change behaviours, there is something that we CAN do right away; and that’s to get out there and clean up. “

Anyone can take part in The Great Cumbrian Litter Pick, either by registering your own community or individual litter pick, or by joining one of the many organised picks around the county.
