Friends of The Lake District 85th Anniversary Celebration
“In Our Hands” Premiere
Poem written by Harriet Fraser
Short Film produced and directed by Terry Abraham
Friday 25th October

We're celebrating our birthday milestone in film, words and photographs at the Rheged Centre, Penrith this autumn and we're inviting you to come along.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a group of visionary conservationists recognised that the fragile beauty of the spectacular Lake District landscape, the inspiration for poets and artists down the centuries, was under threat from the conflict between ‘use and delight’.

Out of this concern, at a rally in Fitz Park, Keswick on June 17th 1934, Friends of the Lake District was born. From lobbying to influence the creation of the Lake District as a National Park, to fighting many major threats to the magnificence of these cherished landscapes, the charity has been the backbone of the protection of the Lake District for 85 years. And continues to stand up for the beauty, tranquility and freedom of the fells.

“In Our Hands” is a bewitching blend of poetry and superlative visual imagery which celebrates the vital connections between people and place; looks to the future for our children and recognises that Friends of the Lake District will always have, on behalf of this much-loved landscape, “the dedication to continue to ask, are we on the right road?”

The evening will begin with a series of talks and reflections:

– DOUGLAS CHALMERS, Chief Executive, Friends of the Lake District – a celebration of 85 years of landscape protection and a view to the future.

– HARRIET FRASER, Writer, Poet and Author – the creative process behind the evolution and conception of the poem “In Our Hands”.

– TERRY ABRAHAM, Award-winning Film maker and Photographer, Producer and Director – how the words of the poem were brought to life through the medium of film and reflections on his final film in the Life of a Mountain Trilogy – Helvellyn – due for release in May 2020 with a premiere at Rheged, in which “In Our Hands” will feature.

A trailer of Life of a Mountain: Helvellyn will lead to the finale and premiere showing of our film, “In Our Hands” commissioned to celebrate our 85th anniversary, 1934 – 2019.
