“For me as an adventurer – someone who makes a living by encouraging others to realise that they can have adventures… close to home, that are every bit as rewarding and exciting as those found overseas – the Lake District has set the scene for some of the most memorable experiences of my life”. Phoebe Smith.

Phoebe, Editor-at-Large of Wanderlust Travel Magazine, regularly writes for The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Times (of London) and is an award-winning broadcaster for BBC Radio 4's From Our Own Correspondent. She is the author of several books including ‘Extreme Sleeps: Adventures of a Wild Camper’, ‘Wilderness Weekends: Wild Adventures in Britain's Rugged Corners’ and the first guidebook to British bothies – ‘Book of the Bothy’.

Phoebe was right behind our campaign against the zip wires over Thirlmere, advocating instead real adventure that “...did not require me leaving anything behind on Lakeland’s beautiful landscape other than a footprint in the snow of the soft imprint of my tent in the grass.”
