Here’s the list of all the brilliant volunteering opportunities at our Buttermere Fell Care Day on FRIDAY 8TH NOVEMBER and now’s the time to get yourself signed up for the activity that appeals to you. Numbers are limited on each task so places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. 

Our hub for the day is Buttermere Village Hall. Volunteers sign in at hub from 9.00 am for 9.30 and set off in groups on tasks led by skilled leaders. Everyone returns to the hub at the end of the day for tea and cakes, hurrah! Activities finish by 3.00 pm latest.

Practical Conservation and Learning Tasks What does it involve? How physically demanding is it and am I old enough?

1. Dry stone walling

9:30 – 3:00

Beloved as a feature of beauty, dry stone walls also provide an essential function for farmers as livestock barriers. This is fantastic opportunity to learn the skill of this traditional, rural craft near Crummock Water.

2. Lakeshore Litter Pick

9:30 – 2:30

Take a gentle walk around the shores of beautiful Buttermere with litter pickers and bags to make the area spick and span for the Autumn.

3. Rail and Post Fencing

9:30 – 3:00

A satisfying task for those who like to get handy with their hammers and elbow grease! Beautiful Buttermere views guaranteed.

4. Sheep Proof Fencing

9:30 – 3:00

Another satisfying task for those who like to get handy with their hammers and elbow grease! More beautiful Buttermere views guaranteed.

5. Tree Planting

A fabulous opportunity to plant native species at High Rannerdale; location of the iconic Rannerdale Bluebells.

6. Pitching and Path Resurfacing

Help with the important task of pitching and resurfacing the much-trod, well-used path at the head of Buttermere.

7. Hedge Planting

Spend a happy day planting up hedging saplings at the Gatescarth end of the lake.

8. Wilderness Skills

Get yourself down to Long How woods to learn how to make an atlatl thrower, make a fire and do some campfire cooking including ponassing fish over fire.

9. Scarth Gap Upland Path Maintenance

Help restore and clear our well used upland paths up paths whilst learning about path maintenance on the way up to Scarth Gap with the Fix the Fells Lengthsmen.
