90th Birthday Nature appeal

It’s Friends of the Lake District’s 90th birthday this year.  A good moment to reflect on the impressive heritage of the charity, forged over nearly a century by the collective contribution of hundreds of staff, trustees, volunteers, and members. People who love this special place, and who want to conserve it for the future. People like you.

In our consultation questionnaire last year, you told us to focus on preventing inappropriate development, helping nature to recover, and combatting the effects of climate change.  We’ve listened to that feedback, so we’re acquiring a piece of land next to our existing site at Dam Mire – land which was being targeted by housing developers.

 

 

On it we’re planning new planting which will ‘slow the flow’ of water and capture carbon from the atmosphere.  We’re hoping to make new habitats for rare red squirrels and amphibians.  And we want to improve access and paths, so we can all enjoy this wild place at the foot of Blencathra.

We can only do this work – and dozens of similar projects across the 600 hectares of Cumbrian land which we look after – if we can continue to rely on support from people who care about these landscapes. People like you.
